On the flight to Sapporo, Hokkaido

It's about 10am in the morning now, and we are really starting get into the 'meat' of the tour.

Aerial view from above Hokkaido! Note the undulating mountainous landscape of the island gives it a picturesque 'texture' from this distance. Snow-capped volcanic peaks can be seen, with snow filling their dormant craters. The interior seems mostly uninhabited, the settlements seemingly restricted to the small areas of flat land near the coast.
 
Remembering and comparing with the scene from above Honshu, for RPG players, one gets a strong feeling of "you have entered a new area". Memories of flying Balamb Garden over the world map in ~ Final Fantasy VIII ~ come to mind.

The further north we go, the whiter the landscape seems to become. Now even the lower foothills seem to be covered in white.

The journey seemed uneventful - for us passengers blissfully insulated in the environment of the comfortable plane. But more on this later...
