This question lovingly directed to all Sarawakian
readers:
|
Q. Who was the first Chief Minister of
Sarawak?
|
Does any Sarawakian
know?
Especially to my Sarawakian friends, they could ask
their other friends, and out of 10, count how many can answer this... if at
all... correctly.
Not being sarcastic, but there's a reason behind
it (read to the end of the article to find out.)
First of all, though, maybe you're wondering why do I have this question
today?
Triggered by this first thought:
I wonder how much is the current petrol price in Brunei.
In the
recent environment of rising world petrol prices for the past two years or so, I
wonder how was Brunei affected all along?
Well, back to the main topic, there's no blame if no one ever remembers his
name...
what I'm fuming about is...
selective inclusion in our history syllabus
Like I would remember (or even know) who was the first mayor of
Kuala Lumpur. And in fact I do -- and without the benefit of a Google Search. he is
Dato' Lokman, none other than the one with a school named after
him.
Anyway, Sarawak is almost like a nation unto
itself, so knowing who the hell was the first Chief Minister seems to be a whole
lot more important than knowing or not knowing who the first Lord Mayor of KL
was.
I wonder though, whether there were any schools
named after him - to know why, read on...
Original article here, but copied below just in case
it gets taken down, as it might be perceived, due to its emphasis on a certain
episode, to have a mite of strong biasness:
I wonder how much competition would an independent Sarawak or Sabah, in 50 years, have provided the Peninsular - provided that their leaders didn't go down the same path of unaccountably managing (i.e. squandering without any transparency) the country's resources. It is always a wonder to me why countries with no natural resources such as Japan or Switzerland manage to get to their level of technical advancement. Don't give me that they started earlier - we had 50 years - and coupled with the benefit of not needing to reinvent the wheel for many technologies - i.e. we didn't even need to have to come up with any new technologies like Japan or Switzerland had to - In any case, with our rich natural resources we could just have purchased up to a certain level and continue to develop from there rather than needing to start from scratch. And we didn't have two atomic bombs dropped on any of our cities, either.
Would they (Sabah and Sarawak) be another two Singapores? Or just ... two more Malaysias?
Anyway :-
Ningkan, Stephen Kalong
(1920–1997), first chief minister of the East Malaysian state of Sarawak.
Stephen Kalong Ningkan served as first chief minister of the East Malaysian
state of Sarawak between July 1963 and September 1966. Prior to Sarawak's
joining the union of Malaya, Singapore, and North Borneo to form the Federation
of Malaysia, Sarawak was a British colony. Born in Sarawak of Iban and Chinese
ancestry, Ningkan is probably best known for triggering a constitutional crisis
when he refused to vacate his office after being dismissed by the Sarawakian
governor. Ningkan, as leader of the Council Negri (the state legislature), had
purportedly ceased to command the confidence of the majority of the council.
With the backing of the federal government in Kuala Lumpur, the governor
proceeded to appoint a new chief minister. Ningkan's refusal to vacate his
office, resulting in a constitutional impasse that was perceived to threaten the
fragile unity of Malaysia, aroused a vigorous reaction from the federal
government.
On 14 September 1966, Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Malaysia's head of state,
proclaimed a state of emergency in Sarawak on the basis that its
security
was threatened by the constitutional crisis. Under emergency rule, Parliament
was legislatively enabled to exercise further powers, effectively governing
Sarawak from the federal capital. Ningkan appealed his dismissal all the way to
the Privy Council in London, Malaysia's then final appellate court, but lost his
appeal for a declaration that he was still chief minister of Sarawak. A firm
believer that Sarawakians were entitled to have full citizenship rights and to
participate in Malaysia's national development on a par with the Malays on the
Malaya Peninsula, Ningkan slipped into political oblivion after his removal from
office.
The constitutional crisis that Ningkan was embroiled in should be seen in the
light of the volatile political matrix in Malaysia then. After Malaysia was
created through the union of Malaya and Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak on 16
September 1963, communal tension rose over the core identity of Malaysia. The
politically convenient union was short-lived and Singapore left the federation
on 9 August 1965. At the federal level, there was concern that Sarawak and Sabah
might follow Singapore and secede from Malaysia. The removal of Ningkan, albeit
by constitutional means, was an attempt by the federal government in Kuala
Lumpur to exercise indirect control by aligning East Malaysian political parties
with the United Malays National Organization–dominated coalition at the
center.

I've asked this question many times before, and
I'll ask it again - Since Malaysia is a net petroleum producer, why does the
population not rejoice when the world price of petroleum goes up? Instead, what
happens is that when the world price of petroleum goes up, the prices at the
local pumps will go up too.
Then ... what is the use of having petroleum reserves
even exist here in the first place?
Well, the reason why I repeat this question is that
all the times I've asked it, I cannot remember getting any satisfactory answer.
Or even a tongue-in-cheek, witty one. The reaction elicited being "..." or some
mumbling that reflects the sentiment as expressed in the title of this very
post.
Wonder if I could get some answer now which is ...
hopefully insightful ones, but at the very least, not a boring
one...
Being the producer of so-called high-quality
low-sulphur petroleum, coupled with a relatively low population, conventional
thinking would point that we should in fact be rolling in contentment with every tick in the
never-ending upward spiral of petroleum prices. (Loudspeaker and ticker tapes
announcement in city: Today, the world oil prices went up by another $1.
Reaction of populace: "Hooray!" *throws bags, briefcases and other objects into
air in celebration*)
Somehow that above imagined scenario has a rather comical
feeling to it...
A bit more grim, though, is that the reality of the
chain effect of the rising cost of living for the peasants brings to mind this quote:
|
Marie Antoinette - if they don't have bread, then
they can eat cake!
|
(Historically, though, this phrase is said to have
not originated from her, but then again, regardless of the accuracy of the
attributing of this quote to her, she lost her head in the ensuing social
upheaval, nevertheless.)
Note: As this kind of post has caused
misunderstandings before, must mention beforehand that this is not an
emotionally charged post. The impersonal anonimity of the Internet always tends
to double the severity of apparent negative emotions, while halving the effect
of good intentions.

As a change to the usual, for the sake of better learning, I found that it's more effective to place the word list first. Although it might interfere with the atmosphere somewhat but.......... ssshhh... you don't tell and I don't say, no one will notice...
To sing along, scroll all the way down for the romaji.
This time it's just a music file... so there's nothing wrong with your PC, no video is displayed.

Kiseki no Kakera
(Piece of a Miracle)
As the morning sunlight streams
through
I immediately start to think of you.
The moment our eyes first met
This love began.
This light illuminates our future that's because
you're my destined one
I start to smile
This very feeling, I've been searching for it all
along
I have grasped this piece of a miracle which fell
into this world
I will run to your side, my love!
The two of us can overcome any obstacle, no matter
how high
Even though our love is still young, it's my
treasure!
On this suspense-filled night
We're teased by the promise of our coming bliss
This flash of light this sudden chance meeting
in this world there's only one destiny
Unintentionally tears came to my eyes
As I casually think about the reason for
this
I have grasped this piece of a miracle which fell
into this world
I will chase after you, my love!
The two of us can fly over the ocean, no matter how
wide
Even though our love is still young, it's my
treasure!
I have grasped this piece of a miracle which fell
into this world
I will run to your side, my love!
The two of us can overcome any obstacle, no matter
how high
Even though our love is still young, it's my
treasure!

By the way - some of you may have received spam
regarding a certain Brazilian psychic who predicts ominous happenings
soon this year and beyond (making long-term investments like those for
4-7 years risky.)
Well now, be not alarmed, as some searching has turned up that this
person has a track record as illustrated below (from Japanese Wikipedia)
Compare the maru(O)/batsu(X) marks to evaluate his track record of past predictions.
Looks like there's no pressing need to cancel your overseas trips, stock emergency rations, and get laid.
But he actually made one correct prediction... Italy won the FIFA World Cup 2006 !!! *shocked* :-O Arghhh!!!!!!
(EDIT: More accurately - What he actually stated was, "Italy has a chance to win, Brazil won't win". Well then, so did the other 32 or so teams which participated had a chance to win. Including England.)
... Could it then be... ominously... true???

Questions posted in forum
Hello there folks,
I have 2 questions about copying and pasting images (from online locations) into the JCE editor. The problem I am facing is my pasted image is displayed for just a short while, then it collapses into an error (or a URL). Details are as below.
I am using Joomla v1.0.15 and JCE mambot 1.1.18.
1.
Let's say: I open an image in the Joomla Media Manager, and then open it in a browser window/tab, then highlight the image and Ctrl-C copy it - then I click on the JCE rich text editor area to paste it.
What happens is: The image is displayed just briefly, before it collapses into
The image “http://virtualestate.org/ultrabeast/images/site/CoatOfArmsJoomla138x138px.jpg ” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
which is enclosed in an image placeholder box.
Now I am very sure that my image is totally alright.
The funny thing is that, if I load that same image, in a browser window with the same URL but with "www." in front, as below
http://www.virtualestate.org/ultrabeast/images/site/CoatOfArmsJoomla138x138px.jpg
and copy and paste in the exact same way, the image is correctly pasted, no problems.
Same goes for images from external locations - copying and pasting an image from my other site
http://ubill.webs.com/blog/Raki%20Cold.jpg
also doesn't have problems.
The thing is, I also tried copying and pasting all the above 3 test images to my Microsoft Outlook Express new message (HTML mail mode), all are displayed without hitches.
2.
Another question is, all images I open with the URL without "www." in front will have the "IMG alt" text automatically generated as below, regardless that it can be displayed in the browser window:
The image “http://virtualestate.org/ultrabeast/images/site/CoatOfArmsJoomla138x138px.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
Whereas if I open the image with the "www." URL in front first, the IMG alt text is automatically set to the same as the image URL, as below:
http://www.virtualestate.org/ultrabeast/images/site/CoatOfArmsJoomla138x138px.jpg
..which is what I want.
Anyone know why is it like this?
I need to find out what's happening and a way around this, the reason being:
The way that I want to insert pictures into my posts is to open all of them in new browser tabs, then highlight, Ctrl-C copy them, and paste them into my post body, and from there use the center/left align/right align/etc. formatting buttons to format them, as opposed to inserting pics using the JCE Image Manager.
I have included screenshots to show what I mean.
Meanwhile, you can also try this on your own JCE as I didn't disable image hotlinking for all the three test pictures above.
Let me know if anyone need more details on this. As you can see, I'm trying very hard on eliminating the possibilities but still have no answers. Hope you can help me.
Apart from this JCE is the best and has everything else I need.
Thanks.

Just started watching this anime
'Tokimeki', which I received from my friend as early
back as February 2008. It has to be said that I haven't enjoyed myself this much
in the same way since... probably more than 5 (five) years ago since
the days of Hanaukyo Maids (*begins prostrating in deep
reverence*)
Tokimeki: Heartbeat,
Palpitations, Throbbing, Excitement... that feeling one gets when looking at or
being close to someone one really likes (like, a crush)
|
It's an anime, set in school times which brings back memories of
nostalgic schoolyard romances (or rather, in many cases, what
could have happened T_T )
So........... what's the premise of the
story?
Ah... And so we have here again the
recurring theme in numerous animes: A regular guy
holding so much appeal for the girls to all gravitate towards
him.
It's truly a mystery why this could even happen,
as he appears to have no special qualities at all apart from holding so
much appeal for the girls to all gravitate towards him. I
still can't figure out the reason, could somebody help me out with this one
please.
This inexplicable, yet incredibly
irresistible attraction force invariably gives rise to chance
misunderstandings whereby you bite your nails in anxiety whether this
instance will cause the male lead to get the 'general bad
ending' where he ends up with none of the girls in the
end -- often in a scene looking up into the sky and narrating some boring
monologue. More importantly, this means that, when that happens, apart from that profound sky
scene, no memorable images are forthcoming.
Anyway, for those of you who are wondering, this
anime is tastefully SFW (Safe For Work) folks, it's an official release by the
same people who brought to you the genre of 'love simulations'... the famed
video game maker Konami. Sorry to disappoint you, gomen ne...
And what exactly then does one do in school life?
Let me see... first of all, one has to study hard to match up to all the hopes
and dreams that one's parents have so earnestly vested (and monetarily invested)
in one's goodself, and take exams.
But of course 26 episodes to detail out all that
would meet with lukewarm response so what is featured in this anime is
interaction between friends.. friendships, rivalries (oooh) fights of animated
violence and so on... and 'events', which involve at
least one of
i.going to the beach (waaaa...... umi
~!!!)
ii. going camping in the rural mountains (where
some truth or dare type game inevitably leaves a couple (the male lead and
one of the selection of comely anime girls)
iii. the hot springs (where the boys & girls
are separated by just a bamboo wall in the pool)
or all of the above, which expedite the occurence of 'RABU-RABU' (LOVE LOVE)
situations... ohoho...
And of course, join clubs, competitions, and
organize activities.
But come on, who hasn't joined a club,
activities, or helped to organize club activities, for the motive of furthering
self-development at the same time forming lasting friendships? ...
...
Let me rephrase that: Who hasn't joined a club
for the sole motive of facilitating the getting close to a certain
girl(s)?
So for all you lucky kids who are still insulated
from the rigours of adult situations (like paying the bills and
doing the taxes) in the institution called school ... Remember children...
we will regret the things we did not do more than the things we did do
(and subsequently regretted.)
Sore ja, minna-san, tokimeki kiyoku yoku
tsukaimashou ne ~
Well, everybody... Make yourself some
exciting memories ~ ^_~
Jikai yokoku (Preview of Next
Episode)
Mina: I've never gotten wet
before...

Mina: It seems like the rain avoids me, so it
doesn't rain around me...

2. line-height line is EVIL. It caused the large font text (36pt, or '7') to overlap, making the preceding post 'MOST PEOPLE ARE OTHER PEOPLE.' impossible. Deleting this line made everything WYSIWYG-peachy in the rich text editor again ;)

Either the JoomlaComment component was scripted to not use AJAX when using IE - or it's: because AJAX wouldn't have worked on IE anyway, it was then scripted this way.
